The Endorsement

I’m a member of the younger generation, a generation whose livelihood later on in life is dependent very much on what goes on today. And when one steps back to look at what is going on today in Washington, one shudders in fear. Republicans and Democrats supposedly “opposing” each other on smaller social issues, but willing to comprise with each other in the area of “Homeland Security”, a term coined by the Bush administration after the September 11th, 2001 attacks. What has “Homeland Security” done for us in the past seven years? Warrentless wiretapping, the Military Commissions Act, and the PATRIOT Act. Acts which has systematically removed Constitutional protections, allowing for illegal and unwarranted spying on citizens by the United States government, and legal immunity for companies such as AT&T who aid the government in doing so; allowing for the President, any President, to dictate one an “enemy combatant” and have that United States citizen locked up indefinitely, without a trial via the normal court system, a right guaranteed to you in the United States Constitution.

That’s why I support Bob Barr, the Libertarian for President.

I grew up under Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

OK, that last one was a joke. But what’s not a joke, but sure sounds like it should be? That fact that in the ’90s, Bill Clinton was impeached and nearly got kicked out of office because he lied about having sexual relations with an intern. Something that affected no one except his family and the White House itself. Yet, when George W. Bush abuses his power and exploits a tragedy such as the September 11th attacks to push an agenda of neoconservatism and big government spying, when a President misleads an entire country into going to an undeclared war in Iraq and leaving us there for more than five years and going on six, and proves completely incompetent when handling a mass national disaster such as Hurricane Katrina; when one congressman attempts to start impeachment trials against this President, the speaker of the House, a Democrat, wouldn’t even think about it. Some “opposition” party.

People aren’t dumb anymore. I have loved this election cycle, it has showed that many more people are excited and caring about the United States election process. But there’s a problem: we still ended up with two candidates who only differ in small, social issues. Barack Obama wants to increase the national debt by giving away free healthcare, John McCain wants to increase the national debt by continuing to fund a crippling foreign policy, two wars and a possible third with Iran brewing. Neither of them talk about maybe lowering the national debt. What about foreign policy? John McCain fully supports keeping the best men and women America has in a war that we should have never started. Barack Obama says he’ll pull our troops out of Iraq, but has hinted at the possibility of going to war with Iran to protect Israel. What about the rest of our troops, stationed at bases in other countries? Does Germany really need our troops? I didn’t think so. Do you see other countries’ military bases on our land? Again, I didn’t think so.
